PSYBT New's Jan 2012
THE SAME imagination that Natalie Turnbull puts into making up a bouquet of flowers, she is also applying to her business plans. The co-owner of florists, Lily Pad Flowers, is constantly coming up with new ideas to ensure that, despite the recession, her customers keep coming back.
Operating from premises in the Marchmont district of the capital, Lily Pad Flowers has been going for four years and, one of the key ways it differentiates itself from other florists is by specialising in rare and unusual flowers.
Says the 25 year-old: “I don’t want to be selling flowers you might find anywhere else, I want us to be different. And I certainly know that some of our customers will go out of their way to come to the shop because we are different and also because - at certain times of the year - a lot of our stock is actually locally-grown.
“That said, we buy, as most florists do, from the international distributors, such as in Holland, but I will seek out the rare and exotic, rather than the more standard lines.”
She employs four assistants, on a part-time basis, and co-owns the business with Ghislain Mercier, who deals more with the administration side of things.
The business has made a recent push into the weddings market, recognising there is a certain guaranteed demand.
“[At the time of writing] We have 40 weddings booked for 2012, when we had a dozen this time last year. I really do love being involved in weddings, I have so much passion. I absolutely love it, being able to be part of the couple’s special day. It’s a day unique to them and to be part of it is so enjoyable and exciting.
“It’s exciting because, sometimes, you come up with a theme that the couple really embrace. The other day, a couple came in, who are both involved in the construction industry. I suggested floral arrangements with a construction theme - including using bricks - and at first they weren’t sure. And then they could see what I was thinking and left with ideas about how their wedding cake might also have a construction theme.”
At school, Natalie liked “getting her hands dirty”, with art one of her favourite subjects. She left school to work in various florists before deciding to make the leap into self-employment with the help of the PSYBT.
It is her imagination that she believes is her biggest asset. “I always have a million things I want to be doing. I am always looking ahead, trying to work as hard as possible to make them happen. I am really looking forward to 2012.”
